Water polo is a team sport that is similar to soccer and basketball in a pool. The team with the ball is on offense while the other team is on defense. The team with the ball tries to score a goal by throwing or hitting the ball into the opponent’s goal. The defending tries to protect their goal and steal the ball. The thrill of the sport comes from scoring goals and playing with your teammates and friends.

How to Play

The objective of water polo is to score points in the other team’s goal and the team with the most points wins.

Sports Role(s)

  • The goalkeeper protects the ball from getting into their goal.
  • Left and right wings have the most ground to cover. When the possession of the ball changes they either have to go on defense or present more attack options.
  • Left and right drivers are in charge of ball control and have shooting skills. They are also on defense.
  • Point usually starts the attacking possessions and directs the offense.
  • Center forward is part of the attacking position. They look for gaps in the defense and try to make shots into the goalie.

Equipment Requirements

  • Caps to keep the players hair dry.
  • Mouth guard to protect the players mouths.
  • Swimming trunks or suits
  • Water Polo Ball or Volleyball
  • Swimming goggles so that players are able to see when water is splashed in their eyes.

Dezso Gyarmati

Dezso was a Hungarian water polo player. He was a three-time gold medalist in the Olympic championship. He won silver in 1948 London, gold in 1952 Helsinki, gold in 1956 Melbourne, bronze in 1960 Rome, and gold in 1964 Tokyo. Alongside those awards he won gold in 1954 and 1962 in the European championship. He later became the coach of the Hungarian national water polo team. He’s widely regarded as a legendary player and was the most decorated player in the history of water polo. He died August 18, 2013.
