Rowing is a sport where athletes propel a boat using fixed oars as a lever.

How to Play

The objective of rowing is trying to use the oars to propel the boat through the water at high speeds to win the race.

  • Coxless four are like the pairs but with four rowers.

  • Coxswain is the person to facilitate the steering and they sit at the stern of the boat.

Equipment Requirements

  • Rowing boats, also known as shells.
  • Rowing clothing which is soft, breathable and flexible so it doesn’t interfere with the athletes performance.
  • Gloves that protect the athletes from painful blisters from the oars.
  • Megaphone so that the rowers can hear the coach over the crowds and perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Oars used to propel the boat.

Alex took up rowing when he was just 18 years old. However, for a brief time he gave up rowing until he saw a fellow New Zealander compete in the Olympics. Alex is a two time Olympic champion and a five time world champion in the single sculls. He is also a seven time New Zealand champion. He has received the New Zealand Sportsman of the year five times.
