Polo

Polo is a game where players are on horseback using a mallet with long, flexible handles to drive the ball down a grass field.

How to Play

Polo is played outdoors on a field with two goalposts at each end. Teams can score points by hitting the ball between the goalposts. Each team has four players and every game has umpires and referees on the sidelines. Teams pass the ball to each other with speed and maneuvering. The teams are trying to score a point while the other team tries to stop them.

Sports Role(s)

  • Each player has a responsibility and each of the roles are numbered and not named.
  • Number one is usually the weakest player, but has the most difficult position. They are responsible for scoring goals and trying to stop the opposing teams number four.
  • Number two is the hustler or scrambler meaning they are always scrapping for the ball.
  • Number three plays the quarterback and is also the pivot man. He needs to be the tactical leader.
  • Number four is the defense player and they can move anywhere on the field to prevent the other team from scoring.

Equipment Requirements

  • A protective helmet, riding boots just below the knee and a colored shirt with the number of his position.
  • Players can also wear knee pad and spurs, but not sharp and a whip to make the horse go faster or where they want the horse to go.
  • The ball used is made out of bamboo or willow root.
  • The mallet used to hit the ball has a rubber-wrapped grip with a webbed thong.
  • Saddles to ride the horses with.
