Netball is a similar game like basketball but players do not dribble the ball, instead, they pass the ball to one another. This sport is predominantly played by women.

How to Play

The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team. Goals can be scored by a team member positioned in the attack shooting circle and shoots the ball through the goal ring. The team with the most goals scored wins.

Sports Role(s)

  • There are seven players on the court and each player has a position.
  • The goalkeeper is allowed in the defensive goal third and the shooting circle. They defend against the opposing team's Goal shooter.
  • The goal defense is allowed in the center third and defensive third, including the shooting circle. They defend against the opposing team's Goal Attack.
  • The Wing Defense is allowed in the center and defensive thirds but not in the shooting circle. They defend against the opposing team's Wing Attack.
  • The Center is allowed in all three thirds of the court except the shooting circles. They go against the other team’s Center.
  • The Wing Attack is allowed in center and goal third in the direction their team is shooting. They are not allowed in the shooting circle. They go against the opposing team's Wing Defense.
  • The Goal Attack is allowed in center and goal third and the shooting circle. They are allowed to shoot and score points. They go against the opposing team’s Goal Defense.
  • The Goal shooter is only allowed in the attacking goal third and the shooting circle. They are the other players that can score points. They go against the opposing team's Goalkeeper.

Equipment Requirements

  • A netball which looks similar to a volleyball.
  • Support gear which is optional contains knee or ankle braces for greater stability.
  • Kinesio tape can also be used for shoulders, knees or ankles to help support and relieve pain of muscles and joints.
  • Netball bibs which is the jersey that tells the players position.
  • Netball shoes specifically designed to withstand side-to-side and stop-start movements on the court.

Maria Folau

Maria is a now retired netball player. She started getting into netball when she was in college. She was a part of the winning team that brought home the 2005 World Youth Cup. She has won gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 2009 World Netball Series and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2007 she won a silver medal at the World Netball Championships.
