Judo is a system of unarmed combat, a modern form of Japanese material art.

How to Play

The objective of Judo is to cleanly throw, pin, or master the opponent. In order to cause your opponent to yield, athletes must apply pressure to the arm joints or to the neck. The athlete who causes their opponent to yield first wins.

Equipment Requirements

  • Judo belts which indicate what skill level each athlete is on.
  • Gis is a traditional uniform that athletes wear for practice and for competitions. During competitions it is called Judogi
  • Mouthguard to protect athlete’s mouth and teeth.
  • Tape which helps produce compression on the fingers and ankles, keeping them from swelling.

Tadahiro Nomura

Nomura is one of the most famous judo competitors in Japan. He is the only judoka in the world who has won three gold medals in a row for the Olympics in the lightweight division. Nomura’s grandfather was a local judo instructor, teaching Nomura when he was six years old. In 1996 he won the All Japan Selected Judo Championships in order to get a spot in the 1996 Summer Olympics.
