Ice Hockey

ise · haa · kee

Ice hockey is contact team sports played on ice skates that is usually played in the winter season on an ice skating rink.

How to Play

The objective of the game is to score a goal with the puck in the other team's net. The team with the most points wins. There are three periods, each 20 minutes long. If there is a tie the game goes into overtime and the game goes into sudden death for five minutes. Each team then has 5 players per team including the goalie. If one of the teams makes a goal their team is awarded two points.

Sports Role(s)

  • Each team is divided into three forwards, two defenses and a goaltender.
  • The forward positions consist of the center and two winger, the left and right wing. These three forwards play as a unit and always play together. They are trying to score a goal for their team.
  • The two defense wingers are trying to prevent the other team from scoring a goal.
  • The goaltender is trying to protect the ball from getting into the goal net.

Equipment Requirements

  • Protective gear such as a helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouth guard, protective gloves, heavily padded shorts, athletic cup, and shin pads. These gear protect the players from possible injuries from the physical contact that is required from this sport.
  • Goaltenders need different gear including a jock, large leg pads, blocking glove, catching glove, chest protector and a goalie mask. These protect the goalie as the puck flies at them at high speeds and they also need to either block or catch the puck.
  • Ice skates for acceleration, speed and maneuvering.
